As you all know, I love a good concept/themed photo shoot!  And what is more perfect for this time of year than a Back to School Concept Shoot!!  I wanted to do something like this myself but haven’t had a chance to put it together!  So I was super excited when I got Jared’s submission and knew I had to feature it!!

Jared of Jared Rey Photography is a photographer in Dallas and he specializes in high school seniors, weddings and portraits.  Read what Jared had to say about this shoot below and be sure to check out his site here.  Thanks for sharing Jared!!

What was your inspiration for the photo shoot?

I enjoy getting inspiration directly from my clients. During our pre-session consultation we discussed clothing options and any particular theme they wanted to incorporate in the session. Peyton has a love for shopping, fashion, and learning so her mom and I collaborated to make the shoot come together to represent these ideas. Her mom had access to old/vintage style books, table, chair, and chalkboard that they wanted to incorporate to represent her love for learning. Her mom also helped pick out all the clothing for Peyton. My job ended up being pretty easy 🙂
Where did this photo shoot take place?
We chose three locations for this session that where within 15 miles of their home. Days before the session took place I drove around their neck of the woods to find open fields, interesting trees, and a fun downtown scene. Peyton lived close to a downtown square and close to some random open fields and parks. So we planned our route accordingly to make the best use of our time.
Tell us about the props used in this shoot…
As mentioned previously, Peyton’s mom was great in hunting down all the clothing, accessories, and props for the school theme.
What camera, lens and equipment were used for this shoot?
I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark2 and used the 50/1.2L primarily but I also enjoyed using the 135/2L for some of her portraits.
What time of day were these taken?
This session was scheduled 2 hours before sunset.
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I process my images with the new VSCO presets from Visual Supply Company along with Alien Skin Exposure 3 for Photoshop CS6. I enjoy the film-like color tones each of these software choices produce.
What is your favorite thing about this session?
I enjoyed all of Peyton’s clothing choices. They were each unique and fun which matched her personality. I love when clothing, accessories, and props can all come together to communicate the personality of the person I am capturing.
What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I ultimately always want to be able to tell a story with my images and I want that story to reflect who my client is at this moment in time. I want them to be able to look back at these photos and see themselves and not some imitation of someone they were trying to be. I strive to get my clients comfortable in front of the camera so that their true personality can shine through each image. I love asking silly questions or making a fool of myself in order to break that initial self-conscious barrier to something that is real, memorable, and fun.
What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Scheduling time to collaborate with your clients to create a unique session is something we should all strive to do. It will set you apart from the competition and help you and your clients create something that you can both take ownership in. Don’t be afraid to hear them out and then as creative director suggest the best ways to communicate what they are trying to say and blend it with your own personal style.
