Concept:  4th of July, it could possibly be photographers favorite holiday to photograph, ok let’s just say it is! What’s not to love, patriotic themes, fireworks, bbq’s, there’s an endless supply of creativity you can put towards a shoot or just walk around town and photograph what’s already going on! Not wanting to be left out, I planned a fun little shoot to celebrate one of my favorite holidays.
Since it’s Tip Tuesday, here are some of the things I thought about when putting my shoot together.
1 – The Style
I knew I wanted to step outside the box for this shoot and away from my typical posed portrait look. Lately I’ve been loving a more editorial/lifestyle look and decided I wanted to tell a story with this shoot. It would be all about a 4th of July afternoon/evening with best friends! Since I was going for a more lifestyle vibe, I decided to also shoot 90% of this session with my 35mm lense.

2 – Wardrobe
Ahhhh the easy part. Right!?? Well for me, too many options are never a good thing. Red, White, & Blue narrows it down, but oh there are so many things you can put together with that combo. Since I knew I was going for a more casual lifestyle vibe, I worked to style the shoot with accessories & jewelry while still keeping it casual & stylish. Remember to think about the style for your shoot. If you are going for a super high fashion shoot, think about finding Red, White & Blue courture styled dresses. I love using Rent the Runway for last minute dresses, becuase they pretty much have ANYTHING you might want!

3 – SCOUT

You’d think this would be a no brainer, but you might be surprised by the number of photographers who admit they don’t really scout many of their locations before hand!  I can’t stress this enough. “The most critical element to success of any endeavor is PREPARATION”  So, yes, scout and scout at the time of day you are going to be shooting. Be creative,  try to a find a new location that will fit the look & feel of the style you have put together. It’s easy to fall into our “usual spots” but when you are doing a styled shoot many times finding a new location will create a finished look. Don’t just wing it the night you have everyone together. 🙂

4 – Hair & Make Up
Even if you plan on doing a casual lifestyle shoot, don’t forget about Hair & Make Up. You don’t have to go over top OR do! A simple braid, or bold red lip can make all the difference. The beauty about creating a Fourth of July themed shoot, is you have an automatic color pallet. Instead of focusing on the wardrobe, maybe you put together a high fashion shoot that showcases Red, White & Blue make up. This is your time to be creative, enjoy it!

5 – Props

American Flags, Sparklers, Sunglasses, Scarves…the list of props you could add to your shoot is endless. Once you decide the style/direction of your shoot, start visualizing what you can add to enhance it. If your style is Fourth of July at the baseball park, you will probably want to add baseball hats, peanuts, coca cola & maybe even a hotdog. Of course the hot dog doesn’t really work if you have high fashion in mind…! 🙂

Whenever you put together a concept, whether it be to celebrate a holiday or a concept to try something new to help you grow as a photographer, having a plan, visualizing what you want and executing it to the best of your ability will guarantee you a successful concept shoot!
