What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?  The beautiful 1975 Bayliner Buccaneer 305 Sailboat named Sol Fetch owned by the Lindells.

Where did this shoot take place?  In Louisville we are lucky to have several beautiful marinas with access to the Ohio River. Captains Quarters is one of these gorgeous marinas that is called home for the sailboats.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?  There was quite a bit of collaborating for this particular shoot.  This would be the first photoshoot for most of our new senior models, but having met them previously, it was easy to keep their personalities and interests in mind when we were choosing the styles and looks for the photoshoot.  I also had an amazing wardrobe stylist who helped me collaborate with Pink Julep Boutique to choose the looks for each senior.  Coupled with my talented hair and makeup team and assistants – it was definitely a team effort!!

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?  I use a Canon 6D.  For the up close shots, I used my workhorse 85L and the the large landscape photos were taken with the wide angle.  Shooting in broad daylight we used a large diffuser and white reflector.

What time of day were these taken?  3 pm – 6 pm

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?  With such bright sun, in Lightroom I turned down the highlights a bit.  However, with shooting in Kelvin, the white balance was already spot on.  Our primary editing techniques are running a skin smoothing filter and boosting the colors and contrast a bit with the soft light option in Photoshop.

What is your favorite thing about this session?  The sailboat!!  Colors!!  Those genuine smiles!  We had such a great time.  Other boat owners were sitting on the back of their boats, the girls truly felt like superstars.  And with a backdrop like that, it was a photographer’s dream!!

What do you want this session to convey about the seniors and about your photography style?  Pink Owl Photography is all about the EXPERIENCE.  It’s not just about senior photos.  I came onto the Pink Owl Team last year as an associate photographer of the Louisville studio, and it’s just as much an experience for me as it is for the girls.  The professional hair and makeup, the fashion, helping them move and feel like true supermodels.  Showing them their true beauty with a little bit of magic.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?  Build relationships with your seniors.  I don’t just photograph my girls then never speak to them again.  One of my favorite parts is instantly making a new friend and getting to see them soar into their senior year and beyond.  Not to mention showing them the back of the camera on the photoshoot and seeing them squeal in delight at seeing themselves shining!
