Having seniors create a mood board for their senior session is a great way to get a sense of what that senior wants for her session.

“When she shared her mood board for her vision for the shoot, I immediately knew what direction I wanted to convey,” said Tyler of Tyler Tyndell Photography.  “Lifestyle fashion was the perfect direction for this shoot.”

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
Foremost, I was inspired by Paisley’s free-spirit personality, when she shared her mood board for her vision for the shoot, I immediately knew what direction I wanted to convey. Lifestyle fashion was the perfect direction for this shoot.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
Faulkner Park, Lindale Texas

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Here in North Texas we can’t always make it to the beach to shoot, but we do have some piney forests. This was my first senior shoot at Faulkner Park ( discovered the park for an engagement session ) Paisley communicated her desire for ” not so typical” senior portraits, and shared with me her wardrobe ideas. based on the wardrobes and her rock star, free spirit attitude, i started narrowing down locations. I wanted something organic and adventurous that would allow her personality to shine.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon 5D mk III
Sigma 35mm f./1.4
Canon 85mm F./1.8
Canon 17-14mm f./ 4

What time of day were these taken?
4-7 pm

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
All images were processed with a variety of VSCO film presets and tweaked to meet my particular style.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
My favorite aspect of this session has to be the fashion. Clothes don’t make the person but they do help communicate a vivid sense of the seniors personality. Paisley’s wardrobe selection was powerful in that way. Her confidence shines through because she was comfortable being herself.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
This session with Paisley is the signature look I aim for when working with seniors. I always explain to the client before shooting that my personal style is to approach the shoot from a fashion/lifestyle perspective. This keeps the pressure off of them feeling like that have to be staring into a lens for hours. Paisley was the perfect client to meet this need. Her willingness and comfortability in taking direction allowed us to work each scene until we captured prime images that express an emotionality and sense of self.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
The most impactful tip that I can share with other photographers when working with seniors is to get away from the posing books and pursue each scene. Great images have to be sought after. Having a starting point for a scene is great, but don’t let your preconceived notions about what looks good keep you from exploring a variety of compositions and poses. Most importantly get them moving. Having the client work through scenes and shoot while they are moving gives a very natural and comfortable feel.
