Senior shoots that include a best friend or a twin sister are always fun to photograph.  This type of shoot allows you to be even more creative and work with new poses that include two rather than just one!  And seniors love this type of shoot because they get to have photographs to remember this special time in their lives as well as the special bond they shared between friends.  Plus, girls just love to be models for a day together! 🙂

Heather of Heather Photography in New Jersey submitted this beautiful twin sister senior session.  Heather says that these two sisters share a special bond and she wanted to capture that in these photos!  I think she succeeded!  Great job Heather!

Check out this session below and be sure to read what Heather had to say about this session.  You can view more of Heather’s work here.  Thanks for sharing Heather!

What was your inspiration for the photo shoot?
I knew before our session that Amanda & Nicole are super close… not only sisters, but twins!  They share everything – a room, a car, shoes, clothes, accessories, play on the same soccer & softball teams, have mutual friends, similar hobbies, you name it!  I really wanted to capture images of them together that showed their bond.
What is different about a sister shoot versus a single senior shoot?
When I photograph one teen, it’s all about my relationship and connection to the person on the other end of the lens.  In A&N’s session, the focus was on capturing the girls interacting with one another and I was somewhat there to witness it.  As much as I like the intentional shots where they’re both looking at the camera, the shots of them laughing at each other are the best.
What are some poses that work well with sisters?
My motto is: the closer, the better.  Hold hands, sit close, be connected.
How often do you do photo shoots for sisters?
This was my first session photographing teen sisters!
Where did this photo shoot take place?
We shot this session in a park nearby.  It’s a blink & you miss it kind of location.  A photog friend was in town visiting & we were out for a drive (she was coming along while I was doing some location scouting).  We pulled into this park and didn’t think much of it, until we saw a patch of long grass at the back of the park left unmowed.  Score!   Just past the long grass, we found a little pathway into the woods – another hidden gem.
Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
A&N and I chatted on the phone before our session because I wanted to find out about their likes & styles.  They both really love photography and brought along some of their cameras to incorporate into the shoot.  I also asked them to bring along a laundry basket filled to the brim with clothes, shoes, and accessories so we could mix it up.  I love having clients bring multiple outfit choices along because we can decide right there what’s best to wear for the location, weather conditions, and their mood!
What camera, lens and equipment were used for this shoot?
I shoot with Nikon D700, and primarily used my 85mm 1.4.   I switched to the 50mm 1.4 for the images of the girls laying on the rug and switched once more to my 35mm 1.4 because I wanted to capture more of them in my frame while they were both laying down head-to-head on the grass.
What time of day were these taken?
Late afternoon in August
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I use Lightroom to edit 99% of my images (this session was edited entirely using LR).  I like my images a touch on the cooler side and will tweak little things like white balance, fill light, exposure, contrast, and/or tone curve if needed.  I own a few preset bundles for LR, but use Totally Rad! the most.  If I use a preset, it’s never at full-strength.  I always dial down the settings and customize to my taste.
What is your favorite thing about this session?
their connection to each other
What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
A&N were naturals in front of the camera, no doubt.  For me, it’s not always about capturing the intentional shots but the moments in between.  The laughing and smiling shots are some of my favorites & so natural.  I really love capturing relaxed portraits.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?

I love chatting with the girls throughout the entire session… finding out about how school’s going, college hunting, music, sports, tv, shopping, you name it!  It’s a great way to get to know the girls, and helps to break any nerves or jitters because they’re thinking more about our convo rather than “how do I look” or “am I doing ok?”  I also love to show them images on the back of my camera from time to time.
