Prom Mini Sessions can be a great thing to offer in your senior business.  Not only is it a chance to see your clients all decked out for prom but it allows you to get more sessions under your belt.

Erica Oakley of Expressions by Erica offered prom mini sessions and this particular one stood out.

“This session was behind schedule but I was so glad because we caught the most gorgeous golden hour,” said Erica.  “This couple has been friends since preschool, spent a few years apart while they attended different schools, and then started dating right before their senior year  So Sweet!  Needless to say, this session was extra special,” said Erica.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
The golden hour and the dress were seriously just gorgeous. They alone were enough inspiration to achieve a dreamy, almost Cinderella-like session.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
That’s a funny story really…This is a golf course at the Chockoyotte Country Club. I don’t mean a pretty lush and green course, but a small-town golf course that’s covered in pine straw and pine cones. It wasn’t really even green. And they were actually in the middle of a gold tournament that day and we had to keep moving out of the way. But oh when that golden hour came, it was magical and so worth it!

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
No we didn’t since this was a prom mini session.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon 5d Mark III and 85mm 1.2 (love them!)

What time of day were these taken?
evening (around 7:00)

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
Typically I use PS to apply any presets and then Lightroom to touch up basic exposure and other fixes. However, with this one, all I did was apply the Fall action by Colorvale to bring out the golden light and that was it! I really wanted to keep that dreamy, airy look that it had.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
That to-die-for golden light is amazing. That and Morgan’s dress just made her look like Cinderella. And every girl should feel like that on prom night!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I love golden hour especially with my senior girls and I think it’s the most flattering. I want to be able to provide sessions where they look back and say “wow, I can’t believe you made that look good” talking about the location. Sometimes, I just like to choose the oddest locations just to surprise seniors with the outcome.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Have fun with them. Joke around, be yourself, and let them shine in the photos. Really, when it comes down to it, the location, lighting, wardrobe doesn’t matter – it’s the person or people in the photo.
