Even though parts of the country are finally thawing out from a cold winter, some may not be seeing signs of spring just yet.  This session below shows you how much fun you can have with a senior client in the snow!

“Trying to ward off the winter blues, my senior and I chose a sunny day to go out and capture her images,” said Kaitlin Thompson of Euphoric Shutterbug Photography.  “The weather was perfection, a comfortable temperature and the best golden hour I have seen in some time.”

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
When first planning this session my senior and I wanted a winter wardrobe theme. Cute coats, scarfs and beanies were are main focus. When the day came and we saw the gorgeous weather my inspiration only grew. I wanted to capture her gorgeous smile, which she wore throughout the whole session, and her confidence in her attire. We had a blast going through her clothing and piecing things together. She looked completely comfortable and at ease in front of the camera.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
This shoot took place in Wellsboro Pennsylvania, in a tiny field in between a baseball field and factory. It’s the little gems you find that work best for locations.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
My senior and I did a ton of collaborating! Originally she was going to rock a skater skirt, tights and a chunky sweater. But when the day came and we saw the brilliant sun she changed her mindset, and we went from an edgy shoot to a fun and upbeat sun drenched session. The weather totally matched her sunny and wonderful personality.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Nikon D610
Nikkor 50mm 1.8
Reflector

What time of day were these taken?
4pm

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
Curves adjustment layers were the majority of the post processing, and also a bit of tonal changes to really enhance the warm sunlight.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
The weather was my favorite part of this session. It really gave me a break from the dreary winter weather and gave me back some of that warm look.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
Knowing this senior the way I do, I know she is an upbeat and happy person. I LOVE showcasing real smiles at sessions, no cheese please! She nailed very pose and facial expression I gave her. Looking at her images really reminds me of how fun and happy this girl is. This session also conveys my style by the dreamy lighting and over all tones in each image. I love to shoot into the sun to get those sun flares, warm tones and over all moodiness.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Get to know them! Once you know them, even just a little bit, you can showcase their personalities so much better! If a senior tells me they are upbeat and happy, I get a ton of smiles and movement from them. If they say they are more quiet and shy, I capture that side of them with more delicate poses and piercing facial expressions. Capture THEM, not what you want them to be.
