Doing something a little different for your senior client session is a way to make sure you stand out.  In this senior session below, photographer Callie Manion of Callie Manion Photography in Dallas used film to capture this senior.

“I am a fine art film photographer and I really strive to bring authenticity to each shoot,” said Callie.  “Erika’s session was no exception!”

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
Nature! When Erika contacted me she told me she was a NYC girl at heart and loves nature, but didn’t want anything rustic. Being in Texas you find a lot of rustic approaches to photography sessions, so I was happy to give her something different! We stayed away from barns and cowboy boots and instead focused on a more natural & organic approach to her session.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
We went to a nature center called Bob Jones Nature Center in Southlake, Texas for her session, which allowed for images in beautiful fields, paths, and in a more wooded area to really get the feeling and fun of Fall.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Yes! I always send my clients inspiration boards and suggestions for different looks and what to wear. I then have my clients bring 5-7 outfits to their shoot and I help them pick out the 2 or 3 I feel best fits our location and my client’s personality. Likewise, I also send my clients inspiration boards for locations and types of settings they want. I find out a little about them and then I pick the location to fit both their personality and my needs. I tell all my clients that I play an art director as well as a photographer, so I help style every little detail!

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Mamiya 645af + 80mm 2.8 + Fuji 400h

Canon 5d miii + 50mm 1.4

What time of day were these taken?
Golden Hour around sunset

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
My film was scanned & processed by PhotoVision and my digital was matched to look like my film using Mastin Labs presets!

What is your favorite thing about this session?
I like the versatility and the emotion. You can tell from these images that Erika has different sides to her personality and I wanted to bring that out. I love the shots of her laughing and having fun, and I also love the shots of her making strong eye contact with the camera and showing off her more mature side.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I love photographing seniors because it is so rewarding to be able to work one-on-one with a model and watch them open up in front of my lens! I love seniors who come ready to have fun and show their personality, and Erika did just that. She took direction very well and made each image her own. I work with seniors who want a fine art & editorial look to their images and Erika brought both fun and fine art–a combination that I love!

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
The best thing you can do is make your seniors feel comfortable! If someone feels stiff and uncomfortable, you won’t be able to get the type of images they hired you for! So before I even pick up my camera, I invest time into getting to know my clients so that I can talk to them and make them feel at ease around me!
