Showing off a senior’s unique style is a great way to really capture that senior!  Ashley Gonzales of Ashley Marie Photography did just that with these amazing images.  She truly captured this senior’s stylish, vintage style while showing off the senior’s love of art by using her own art pieces in some of the images.
Check out this session below and read what Ashley had to say about the session.  You can see more of Ashley’s work here.  Thanks for sharing Ashley!
What was your inspiration for the photo shoot?  Julie is a crazy awesome artist with an amazing vintage wardrobe, so we tried to mash the two together for some bright, fun images!
Where did this photo shoot take place?  We live in New Mexico, which has it’s pros and cons when it comes to locations. The best pro is that the culture around here is obsessed with random bright colored buildings, doors and more. So we made use of the randomness and drove all around Alamogordo, NM taking advantage of the little color we could find! We also come permission to take some shots in the Olde Post Antique Shop, which went well with her newest vintagesque dress!
Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?  Since I’m also on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/ashleymphotos) I always get the chance to go through Facebook albums and see what their initial style and options are through their photos. Usually I suggest just bringing the majority of their wardrobe and we just pick as we go, but with Julie I told her to just bring her favorites, because I knew everything she owned would be perfect for what we were going for! She had so many dresses, I had a hard time choosing, so we changed quite a few times! The concept was a mix of her wants and my random ideas, which I think mashed into a pretty fun and creative session!
What camera, lens and equipment were used for this shoot?  I used my Canon 5D Mark II, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 + a reflector
What time of day were these taken?  Morning till noon!
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?  I kept it bright, saturating here and there as much as it would look normal, playing up her crazy awesome eyes and trying to make it as bubbly as I possibly can!
What is your favorite thing about this session?  Everything? I love Julie’s awesome style, her fun poses and all the fun locations we found! It was a good day!
What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?  For Julie, I really wanted to convery her fun personality and amazing talents as a artist, both were so easy to accomplish that I felt that I merely just clicked the button and she did the rest. Although, most sessions aren’t as easy to draw out a senior’s personality, it’s my goal to connect and show who my senior is through my work. Senior sessions should be all about showing off the best you and everything about you! As a photographer, I want to freeze your fun, carefree senior self in images that you can cherish and always look back on in the future!

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?  Connect. Don’t try to be older than them, don’t try to be serious. Without fail, the best senior sessions that I have, are when the senior and I are one on one and they’re nagged by me, not their parents, about sitting up, smiling wider and more. Being nagged by parents tend to freeze kids up and sour their moods, being nagged by their photographer just sounds like I’m trying to help. I make terrible jokes, talk about random things, horror stories from my high school days and show off my terribly clumsy side by falling or mashing up words. Seniors will react more and express more if they feel equal with you. My young appearance and age probably plays a huge factor in this.
