What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
I’m inspired by my clients and Alex is no exception. She is a classic beauty and likes to keep it simple. So that is what we did–just focused on who she is right now!

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?

My advice to clients in general is to keep it simple and classic–both so that their natural beauty will shine through and so their images will have a timeless feel. I wish I could take credit for choosing Alex’s wardrobe, but that belongs to her! Alex nailed it. We decided that her session would take place at a rose garden, which is replete with color and texture to begin with, and Alex chose her looks so well–complementing the beauty of our location while keeping it simple.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
Whetstone Park of Roses in Clintonville, OH

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon 5d mkii
Canon 135mm f/2L
Canon 50mm f/1.4

What time of day were these taken?
starting 2 hours before sunset (in Sept)

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?

I used my go-to workflow for Alex’s session (I rarely change it!). I upload photos to Lightroom 5 and apply one of my favorite VSCO Film 01 Presets. I then export to Photoshop CS6 and use Portraiture at a very low opacity followed (usually) by Clean Workflow from Marissa Gifford’s Signature Action set.  That’s it!

What is your favorite thing about this session?
I marvel at Alex’s expressions, which are at once strong and delicate. And we had the most gorgeous light!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
These images highlight Alex’s taste–simple and beautiful. That is my approach in general–choosing natural settings and poses that allow my clients to feel like their senior session represents them on a really amazing day.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
I used to go into a senior session believing I needed to have a list of poses ready to go. I’d get really stressed out if I forgot something. It really limited my ability to interact with my clients! Now, I prefer to pay attention to how they naturally “pose” themselves and combine that with elements we find on location (benches, trees, walls, etc). Things are much more fun and relaxed. And my clients continually remark about great they look and feel just being themselves. Win win!
