Summer is sunshine, being outdoors, having fun and celebrating America’s Birthday!  The Fourth of July is a wonderful day to be with family and friends and celebrate our country.  But it also happens to be a wonderful inspiration for senior photo shoots!  Red, White and Blue clothes, props and more are a great way to illustrate an American Summer Theme!

All this week, there will be shoots submitted to us by photographers who were inspired by this theme!  The first is from Amber Fox of Amber Fox Photographer!  Amber says that she wanted her shoot to be a boho inspired american look.  She also used this fun theme as the kick off for her Senior Model Shoot!  What a great idea!  Check it out below and read what Amber had to say about it!  Thanks for sharing Amber!  To check out more of Amber’s work, click here.

What inspired you to do a fun July 4th concept?
I was searching for an original concept for my Foxy Senior Model campaign that hadn’t been photographed to death, and then I saw Vintage Vogue post fun pictures of Boho Americana on their Instagram stream. Inspiration had struck! So I partnered with Courtney at Vintage Vogue and she helped style all the girls and had every finishing touch to complete the look for each outfit. Then I whizzed past Michael’s Art Supply and a few other stores to pick up some props, and voila! Pure fun.
Was this a regular senior session or something for your portfolio?
This session was for my Foxy Senior Model kickoff shoot. With my models I like to do a fun concept shoot, so the girls can get to know each other and see how I shoot. I do approach most of my regular senior sessions in the same way I planned out this Fourth of July shoot. I always find out what my girls are passionate about and try to incorporate elements of their passion into the shoot. I really want to create photos that capture the individuality of my senior and I think fun concepts help stand her apart from the rest. My pictures are definitely not their yearbook picture!
What is your favorite thing about this session?
I had a blast with my girls and I think it shows. I really loved planning the shoot, buying all the props and working with Courtney, the amazing stylist and store owner of Vintage Vogue. I am thrilled with how the pictures turned out.
What camera, lens, equipment was used during this session?
I used my awesome 5D Mark 11, 85 mm 1.8, 50 mm 1.4, 16-35 mm 2.8 and my reflector. I also had three assistants, who were my former photography students. I really couldn’t have captured the gorgeous light without the Magana Sisters and their reflector goodness and Katarina’s awesome Mustang. Thanks girls!
Where did this session take place?
This session took place at one of my favorite locations in Fullerton. I needed a spot that I could drive a car up on, and this sweet nature spot fit the bill perfectly. I really love shooting in nature and this spot has the perfect combination of green and California brush.
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I do the same post-processing techniques with each and every photo session. I cull all my photos using Photo Mechanic, which makes sorting and selecting fast and efficient. I then bring them into Lightroom for some basic image adjustments, but do the bulk load of skin retouching and processing in Photoshop.
What do you think this session conveys about your photography style?
This session captures my photography style perfectly, because it encompasses what I strive for with all my shoots. I love shooting high school senior girls in nature and using fun props. My tagline for my brand is Hip and Happy Portraits for Stylish People and I really feel like this shoot is fashion forward and the girls are having fun.
