When Jael DeYoung’s youngest daughter was born with special needs, she looked to an old love of photography to help distract her from all the doctor visits and therapy appointments.  She picked up photography and quickly started her business 5-1/2 years ago in Dallas, Texas.

Photographing the interaction between families and siblings is what she loves to do.  Showing the connection and love between her clients is what she aims to do with every session.  So when it came time to photograph these senior sisters, Jael knew exactly what to do!

Check out the session below and what Jael had to say about this fun, sister session!  You can also check out Jael’s other work here.

What was the inspiration for this photo shoot?  I knew the sisters were interested in photography…so that is the reason behind the old polaroid.  As for the popcorn fight, I just always wanted to incorporate that into one of my sessions, and I knew these girls would be perfect for it.

Where did this shoot take place?  A remote field near my house in Dallas, TX

Did you collaborate with the seniors to come up with the wardrobe for this session?  Not really…the girls texted me pics of what they were wearing so that I could add my input if needed, but I love what they had chosen!  I shot the oldest sister’s senior photos a year ago, so the girls were familiar with my style and what they should wear.

What camera, lens and equipment was used during this photo session?  Nikon D700, 24-70mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 (my favorite lenses)!!

What time of day was this shot?  Because of their ages we were able to shoot this 1 hour before sunset.

Can you share any post processing techniques that were used when editing this session?  I use Florabella actions quite a bit.  They are just the right finishing touch to any of my sessions.

What is your favorite thing about this photo session?  The relationship that I was able to capture between these sisters was my very favorite thing about this session.  They are such an amazing family.

What do you want this session to convey about these seniors and about your photography style?  I would describe my style as very lifestyle-like.  My goal with any session is to capture the interaction and connection between family members, siblings, mom and dad, etc.  I approach my session in a very relaxed and casual fashion.  My sessions are so much more about the people and not what they are wearing or the location we choose.  Most of the time that doesn’t even really make that much of a difference.

What is one tip you could share when it comes to photographing sisters?  Get to know them.  I start off by just talking to them…observing them interacting with one another.  We may not even start shooting right away.  Honestly, that’s how I approach all my sessions.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers about photographing seniors?  Treat them as if they were the adult.  Once I’ve gotten approval from mom or dad to photograph their senior, because they are the ones with the checkbook, I then direct all of my correspondence with the senior and cc mom or dad.  This puts them in charge.  I then have them stay in touch with me as they are choosing outfits, accessories, etc.  They are all about texting me ideas and I love it!
