One thing that I learned after looking at this submission from Nicole Lubin of Nicole Lubin Photography was that you can be inspired by new surroundings. Nicole experienced that first-hand when she was asked to photograph a friend’s senior daughter in California. Nicole lives in Maryland so shooting in California was a bit different. Different architecture, terrain and beaches forced Nicole to shoot outside of her normal element and push herself in a different way. As photographers, we all need to push our creativity and learn from our surroundings. Nicole did just that with these beautiful photos.
I was lucky enough to be in a group at Folio Love with this talented photographer. She was so much fun to hang out with and we became fast friends. Truth be told, everyone in our group rocked and we had tons of fun together!
When Nicole posted a few pics on her facebook page from this session, I knew I had to ask her to share it with all the Seniorologie readers. You see, Nicole doesn’t live in California. But one look at these photos and you would think she photographs beachy, sun-drenched images of senior girls everyday! She definitely shines in this area and I am so glad to show you this session!
Be sure to read what Nicole had to say about this session below and check out her other work on her blog here. Thanks for sharing Nicole!!

What was your inspiration for this photo session? My inspiration for this session was to capture Hannah’s true spirit. Our families know each other well. I’ve seen her grow into a lovely young woman and I’ve seen her interests change along the way. I wanted to document who she was now as I know she will continue to grow and change. Many years later when she looks back at her pictures, I want her to be able to look at those details in her pictures and fondly remember her senior year. The necklace, a gift from her boyfriend, her time on the sailing team, her Jeffrey Campbell shoes. Those kinds of details subtly hidden in her pictures.
Where did this shoot take place? Pirate’s Cove Beach and China Cove Alley in Corona del Mar, California

You don’t typically shoot in California…what was this experience like for you? I knew we would do some beach shots but I wanted to offer some shots with an urban feel as well. I quickly realized that in California they have gorgeous garage doors, in a variety of materials and colors, making an alley a great alternative location to the beach. The turquoise background below was one neighbor’s copper garage doors that had oxidized to a beautiful turquoise contrasting nicely with her orange sandals.
How was it different than shooting in your home state? It was quite different. I live in Baltimore Maryland, an east coast city, compared to Corona Del Mar California, a west coast beach town. The architecture is different, the foliage is different, the terrain is different and most importantly the lighting is different. Sunset pictures on the ocean!
Did you collaborate with this senior on the wardrobe for this shoot? Yes. I recommended that she to pick clothes that she felt beautiful in. Colors that she felt pretty in. Knowing that if she felt pretty she would look pretty and work it. Her mother and I looked through her closet and picked a few pieces out, then she chose her favorites from that. She has quite a few pairs of Jeffrey Campbell shoes, so I knew we wanted to feature those in a picture since they denote a unique style.

What camera, lens and equipment was used during this shoot? I used my Canon 5D Mark II, with my 24-70mm lens and my 70-200mm lens
What time of day was this shot? 4:30-6:00 p.m., sunset that day was at 6:51 p.m.
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing these photos? I really did very little. I ran Florabella’s Classic Color Action. It is a crisp, clean edit and that was perfect for these pictures. Then I ran MCP Eye Doctor to sharpen her eyes.
What is your favorite thing about these photos? It’s hard to pick one favorite thing. I think all of the elements of this session came together wonderfully. The golden hour lighting produced a lovely peachy glow around her. The location was gorgeous, unique with it’s large rocks, sand and water. Most importantly she was game for anything and very relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your photography style? When you look at these pictures I want you to see that Hannah is fun girl, stylish and carefree. She is thoughtful and reflective. She is elegant and beautiful.
