Today’s inspirational session comes from Andrea of Andrea Starr Photography.  These photos definitely give off a rustic, country vibe with lots of chic style!

When Andrea emailed me to submit this session, she told me a little about her experience.  Here is what she had to say…

When I had my senior photos, I put on my best Levi’s and waffle knit top. White socks and black shoes completed the ensemble. I thought I was all that…and more.
On a not-so-bright Sunday, I was to photograph Taylor. She’s the third sibling I’d shot senior portraits of (2 last year) in her family. As I left for the session, huge raindrops starting falling. I saw blue skies toward my destination, though, so I didn’t call it off…the school year was starting soon, so we had to make it happen. As I pulled into an old farm I love to use (run by an 80+ year old cowboy), the sky was clear. While nervous about photos, Taylor didn’t lack confidence about fashion.  She brought 12 outfit combinations, 8 necklaces, bracelets, rings, and three pair of shoes.  We started to lose light after the sixth outfit, but it turns out we made it just in time. We got into our cars after an hour and a half of shooting and as we pulled away from the farm, a massive storm hit. A dramatic ending to a beautiful, fun senior shoot.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?  Taylor lives in the country, but obviously has a chic style. We knew cowboy boots would be part of the mix and, boy, can she rock them.

Where did this shoot take place?  The farm is in nearby Benton City, WA. An 80+ year old cowboy still owns/runs the entire place. It’s a great location because the possibilities are unlimited in terms of getting unique shots; there are places to put clients on the ground, in tall grasses, on rustic porches, near awesomely old barns, etc. And I love that cows were mingling in the background of some of Taylor’s shots.

What time of day was this shot?  We started shooting around 5:00, and I was stressed. On the way to the shoot, it was pouring rain. Somehow, it stopped long enough for the shoot, and then the clouds opened up again just as we were driving away from the farm around 6:30.

What camera, lens and equipment was used during this photo shoot?  I shoot a Nikon D700 with an 85mm prime lens (my fave). I also can’t live without my 74″ Photoflex oval lite-disc– and I have a fabulous lady, Julie, who assists me at shoots.

Can you share any post processing techniques used when editing these photos?  The basic steps I do with all of my photos are: skin softener (but not too much!), blemish remover, add contrast, and when it’s right for the mood and photo, I use a vintage action and/or B&W. The two last steps I do on all photos are an unsharpen mask and noise removal.

What is your favorite thing about these photos?  I love that Taylor is chic, but in a rustic setting. And I’m thrilled that she’s thrilled with the photos because I know she’s her own worst critic (aren’t we all?)!

What do you want this photo session to convey about this senior and about your photography style?  This shoot has all of the elements that I discuss with my seniors prior to shoots–several outfits, lots of accessories, textures in the clothing, and a location and ambiance that suits their personality. Regarding my style, I hope the shoot conveys that I connect with my seniors –I can get them laughing, chatting, or draw out a serious expression, even if they don’t think they’re “good” at serious.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers wanting to get into the senior portrait market?  Make it personal. The pre-meetings with the seniors and their moms, sisters, BFFs…whomever…have been invaluable. The pre-meetings are the time to not only talk wardrobe, makeup, etc., but it’s also a chance for me to get to know them and vice versa. This step takes the awkwardness out of the first 15 minutes of a shoot!
