Today’s inspiration comes from photographer Alyson Edie who proves that a little rain never made anyone melt!  And the result can be so dreamy and unique!!  This senior definitely shines in the rain and this shoot shows the versatility of Alyson as a photographer.

Alyson is the owner of Alyson Edie Photography and Alyson Edie Seniors in Lincoln, Nebraska but she often finds herself traveling to New York City for headshots and portrait shoots.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?

The rain actually really inspired me on this shoot! It kind of forced me to think outside of the box. I got some of my favorite images of the session during a 20 minute rainstorm.

Where did this shoot take place?
We started at my studio in Lincoln, Nebraska, then went to some downtown areas near my studio, then the we headed to a park once the rain let up.
What camera, lens or equipment was used during this session?
I shoot with a Nikon D700, and mostly shot this session with my 50mm f/1.4, and 85mm f/1.8. I also used my 135mm f/2. I use Alien Bees lights in the studio.
What time of day was this shot?
We started at the studio around 4:30, and went outside around 5:30.
Can you share any post-processing techniques you used on these photos?
I like to keep my post-processing style pretty simple. I shoot RAW and do initial color, contrast, and exposure adjustments in Adobe Lightroom 3. I do all my retouching and fine-tuning in Adobe Photoshop CS5. Sometimes I use a few actions from Totally Rad, and I use Alien Skin Exposure 3 on almost every image I shoot. Exposure 3 is a photoshop plug-in that simulates the look of film.
What is your favorite thing about these photos?
My favorite thing about these photos is the fact that we didn’t let the torrential rain stop us from shooting! I loved that Biz was willing to stand out in the rain, and not worry about her hair or her clothes getting wet. She was a great model, very collaborative, spontaneous and willing to try anything.

What do you want this photo session to convey about this senior and about your photography style?
Biz had an elegance in the way she carried herself, and a classy, artistic flair to her style. With her photos, I was going for a soft ethereal quality, to showcase her natural beauty. I would describe my photography style as soft and natural, with a fashion edge, and Biz was the perfect subject to showcase that.

What is one tip you could share with other photographers about photographing seniors?
Talk to your senior, ask them lots of questions about themselves, get to know them. The more comfortable they are with you, the more they will be themselves in front of the camera, and the more likely you will be to capture their true personality.
